  Krasnoyarsk

  City, in central Russia. Located on the upper Yenisey River, it was founded by Cossacks in 1628. In the late 17th cent., it was often attacked by the Tatars and Kirghiz. The Trans-Siberian Railroad brought a period of rapid growth in the 1890s. The site of one of the world's largest hydroelectric stations, built in the 1960s, it is now a commercial and industrial center.

  Krasnoyarsk is the second largest city in Siberia (after Novosibirsk) with 930.000 inhabitants, situated on both sides of the river Enissey. It is now the industrial and cultural centre of the region. The main industry includes machine construction, chemical industry, shipyards and especially aluminium production. There are 2 universities, 15 colleges for higher education, 5 theatres, 4 concert halls and 6 museums.

  Krasnoyarsk is an administrative center in the East Siberian region of Russia with the population more than 3 million people. 

  Krasnoyarsk is one of the earliest settlements of Siberia. It was founded as a fort in 1628 by Cossack Andrey Dubenskiy. It was a wooden fortress with a wall with five towers. For 100 years Krasnoyarsk played the role of frontier advanced post. During its existence it was never conquered. When Siberia was finally joined to Russia in 1690 the fortress officially received the status of a town.

  The extension of the Great Siberian Post Road in 1735 stimulated futher development of the city. Gold discovery and the arrival of the Trans-Siberian Railroad accelerated Krasnoyarsk growth.

  In 1934 the Yenesei province was reorganized into Krasnoyarsk Territory and Krasnoyarsk became its administrative center.

  In 1960 one of the largest hydropower stations was built here.

  Today there are more than 150 enterprises in Krasnoyarsk. The Krasnoyarsk territory is very rich in raw material areas. There are plants producing chemicals, aluminium, wood products and synthetic rubber .

  Many well-known in Russia people were born in Krasnoyarsk. Nowadays Kransoyarsk is a cultural center with  hundred public libraries and sixty seven clubs.

  The Kransoyarks region attracts by its nature which includes several zones such as tundra, taiga and arctic desert. Ist fauna consists of great number spices of birds and mammals. The climate here is not as severe as in Taimir. During the summer the temperature rises up to +30C degree, but in the winter it drops to -30C degree.

  Krasnoyarsk Krai is one of the key regions of Russia. Rich with natural resources, possessing highly developed industries playing leading roles in the economy of Russia, and having industry-oriented scientific and intellectual potential, Krasnoyarsk Krai remains one of the most attractive regions for foreign investment.

  GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION AND CLIMATE

  Located in the central part of Siberia, Krasnoyarsk Krai covers 2.34 million square kilometres, or 13.6 percent of entire Russia. To the north the Krai extends to the Tajmyr Peninsula on the Arctic Ocean; to the east, Irkutsk Oblast and Yakutia Republic; to the south, Tyva republic; and to the west, Tyumen Oblast. The Krai spans several climatic zones, from arctic to continental, and has arctic deserts, tundra and tundra forest - in the north, the taiga - in the central part, and the steppe and forest-steppe - in the south. The south has productive agricultural soils.

  Population of Krasnoyarsk Krai is only 3.5 million, which is about two percent of the population of Russia. Three fourth of the population is urban. The capital, and the largest city, Krasnoyarsk, located in the south, has about 900,000 residents. Other large cities are Norilsk, Yenisejsk, Achinsk, Igarka, and Dudinka.

 ECONOMIC SYSTEM

  Economically, Krasnoyarsk Krai is included in East-Siberian Economic Region. Other subjects of the economical region are Irkutsk and Chita Oblasts, Tuva, Khakasia, Buryatia, Tajmyr and Evenkia Republics, Ust-Ordynsk Autonomous Oblast.

  The Krai is constantly ranked among the ten regions with the highest GDP (gross domestic product) in Russia. The Krai's economy continues its adaptation to market conditions.
